Huthwaite residents’ joy over ‘botched’ home repairs

More than 100 homes were affected and their occupiers left distraught when builders carrying out the scheme left the homes in an appalling state in September last year.

Pensioner Dorothy Taylor (81) was left with rain pouring in her kitchen, sharp metal edges around her home and drain pipes left uncovered leaving water to flood her back yard.

But now the work that was originally promised has been completed.

MP Gloria De Piero stepped in and put pressure on the energy provider and contractors to complete the necessary work.

Dorothy said she is pleased with the results.

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted. Dead pleased in fact because what I’ve got now is 100 per cent improvement to what I had before Gloria got involved. I’m so happy and relieved it is sorted and everyone who has helped has worked so hard to help fix it.”

Many residents contacted Gloria after the botched work.

Retired couple Brian and June Palmer said: “We tried everything to get the work finished ourselves but no one would help us so we cannot thank Gloria enough”

Ms De Piero said: “I’m so pleased for Dorothy and the rest of her neighbours. They’ve finally got something to smile about after being left at their wits end for months because of the sub-standard building work they had done after signing up to this Government scheme.

“I’m just glad I was able to help put this mess right but it should never have got to this stage in the first place.

“Ministers should be embarrassed about what my constituents have been put through.”

Residents clubbed together and presented Gloria with a bouquet of flowers when she visited the homes.
