Man stole shopping for family
Neil Hollett, prosecuting, told Mansfield Magistrates Court how Matyas Berki (43), of Nottingham, was seen on CCTV with another male putting various items into a trolley and escaped without paying as security staff lost sight of him.
Said Mr Hollett: “The defendant came back to the store on 1st June and was recognised in relation to the previous theft.”
Sarah Neale, defending, said: “Mr Berki had no previous convictions when this offence was committed.
“He explains he had met the family that day through a friend of his. I understand the items were then given to the family.”
Ms Neale said Matyas had come to the UK from Hungary but had fallen on hard times after construction work had dried up.
Matyas was given one day’s remand as he was already in custody for a dwelling burglary committed in London after the theft was committed.
