Mansfield teacher’s marathon effort to beat cancer

Andy, deputy head at Wynndale Primary School, in Wynndale Drive, reached the milestone after completing the Retford Half Marathon on Sunday in a time of 1 hour 38.

In fact, Andy achieved his challenge two months ahead of schedule and will continue to raise money for the charity.

Speaking after the race, he said: “It’s been a physical and mental challenge and it’s pushed me to my limits but I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve had so much support from family and friends which has really spurred me on.

“I took on this challenge to raise as much money for Macmillan as possible. We all know that many people are affected by cancer and I wanted to do something to raise awareness and provide financial support. Macmillan nurses do a fantastic job.”

Andy has gone from not being a runner at all to completing the challenge he set himself, and will run the London Marathon next month.

Mark Slade, managing partner at Fidler & Pepper Solicitors, which became a corporate sponsor of Andy, said: “What an inspiring achievement from Andy, who has achieved a goal he set himself and one which will benefit a lot of other people.”

Writing on Facebook, a spokesman for Brown’s Bar, in Berry Hill, Mansfield, which also sponsored Andy, said: “Well done, we’re really proud to know and support you Andy.”
