Mansfield thief stole socks and flip-flops

The court was told how Kryspin Jeznach (22), of no fixed abode, was chased by staff at the town’s Sports Direct after being seen leaving the store with a bulging coat.

Robert Carr, prosecuting, said the polish national’s companion escaped but staff discovered flip-flops and socks. “Jeznach said he was homeless and they were going to split the money to buy food.”

Paul Bilton, defending, said Jeznach had been in the UK for 18 months but had been employed by Sports Direct in Shirebrook but had lost his job and his accommodation.

“He is not an idle person and went on the proverbial Tebit bike to look for work. He got a job at a warehouse but lost in January so was unable to pay accommodation charges and it disappeared.”

The court was told on Wednesday last week how Jeznach had been released on conditional discharge after stealing food from Morrisons in February.

He added: “On this particular occasion the socks were intended for his own use and the socks were for sale to someone else.

“He made a full and frank admission during interview and pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.”

As he passed sentence a magistrate told Jeznach: “You cannot continue along this path. If you do you will go into custody for a long period.

“If you come before this court again the consequences will be more serious.”

Because Jeznach has already spent a night in custody he avoided paying a fine or a victim surcharge and the court costs, which he would normally be charged, were also waived.
