‘Mass Bolero’ to celebrate Torvill and Dean’s Olympic anniversary

Today (Friday 14th February), is 30 years to the day that the Nottinghamshire skaters wowed the world with their Bolero dance, and this unique project will allow the people of Nottingham to pay tribute to the couple.

Community groups, schools, sports venues and individuals are being asked to join in with Nottingham Playhouse and Dance4 to recreate their world-famous Bolero ice dance, as part of a world premiere film.

But no ice skates will be needed - it is being choreographed to work as a piece of dance, choreographed by Jeanefer Jean- Charles, and filmed and edited by the Confetti Media Group for broadcast on Notts TV.

Fiona Buffini, associate director of Nottingham Playhouse, said: “The nation holds Torvill and Dean in great respect and admiration, but nowhere more so than here in Nottingham.

“The Mass Bolero film is a celebration of that admiration, turned into a piece of art.

“It’s genuinely going to be a mass participation project, with a diverse range of groups, including a flash mob event in Nottingham’s city centre, each recreating just 10 seconds of the routine.

“These will be edited together to create a film made up of the contributions of - we hope - thousands of people from around the city.”

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are backing the Mass Bolero project and approaches have been made to many leading organizations and groups across the city.

A full list of participants will be announced on Monday 17th March, together with details of the mass participation opportunity.

The Mass Bolero film will launch neat14 - Nottingham European Arts & Theatre Festival - in May.

neat14 is a festival that celebrates the best European theatre, music, performance and visual art across Nottingham.

“People love Bolero and everyone wants to pay tribute to Torvill and Dean.

“Being able to call upon the support and expertise of Notts TV has turned this great idea into a reality. Nottingham really is pulling out all the stops with this project.”
