Moor Pond Wood open day

YOUNG people have played a prominent role in the major project to restore Papplewick's Moor Pond Wood.

This was reported at an open day to mark completion of work funded by the Local Heritage Initiative at the unique site.

Schoolchildren took time out in the woodland to find out how an archaeological survey is carried out.

Cadets of the 1803 (Hucknall) Air Training Corps got involved in work on the site for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

And then members of the 5th Hucknall Scouts and Cubs cleared and maintained a picnic area.

Moor Pond Wood is of great historical interest because a water-storage reservoir was developed there in the late 18th century by the Robinson family, who owned cotton mills along the River Leen.

The open day took place at Papplewick and Linby Village Hall, organised by the Friends Of Moor Pond Wood group.

Talks about the project were given during the day by Stephen Walker, chairman of the project steering group, and a guided walk was also arranged.

There was an excellent response to an appeal for visitors to take advantage of the occasion by sharing memories of Papplewick. Free refreshments were provided.
