Nottinghamshire gritter vehicles being primed for action

Gritters are on alert for bad weather this weekend across Nottinghamshire

Gritting crews are set to take to Nottinghamshire roads tonight, Friday, November 20 with road surface temperatures forecast to fall close to or just below freezing in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

A final decision will be taken this evening but currently the County Council’s 23 gritting vehicles are being primed to take to the roads from 11pm, after early evening showers have dried up.

If crews do go out this will be only the second time so far this season.

The Council currently has 19,281 tonnes of salt stored in its four grit barns and is in a strong position to deal with the worst winter conditions.

In addition to salting roads, the Council also provides and maintains around 1,300 roadside yellow grit bins. These are provided where:

•A site is very exposed and severely affected by winter weather

•A junction hazard is present

•There is very high pedestrian movement, especially near local centres or the site is used regularly by the elderly, very young or mobility impaired.

Salt in the yellow bins can be used by residents on nearby roads and pavements but is not allowed to be used on private driveways.
