Milk delivery has been part of my life for eight decades

Ever since I was a child more than eight decades ago, I have had milk delivered to my home.

I vividly recall a milkman named Mr Terry coming to our flat at the back of Main Street, Bulwell, where my dad had a shop. Me Terry used to fill a jug we provided for him from a big churn he brought to our home.

Come to think of it, our family also had ginger beer delivered to us in stone bottles by a firm called Cox and Murby.

Later, my late mum and I had milk from our next-door neighbour, who happened to be in the trade, and this arrangement has been continued by the Milk & More company, who took over his business.

Sadly, I am now thinking of cancelling the deliveries because bottles of milk have repeatedly been stolen from my doorstep this year.

Maybe the milk was taken for the children of a hard-up family. If so, I would have been glad to buy them some if they had asked me.

But there is no excuse for theft.

Turning to another subject, I made a tram journey from Bulwell to Hucknall this week.

This was my first since my accident on the Bulwell tram stop platform on my 83rd birthday, which I wrote about in the Dispatch a few weeks ago.

There were quite a few passengers aboard and I was very surprised to find that myself and another elderly man were the only ones to wear face coverings.

It seems significant that we two were in the potentially at-risk category from Covid 19 and the other passengers, being a lot younger, were much less so.

Perhaps, as possible transmitters of the virus, they should have been conscientious enough to bear this factor in mind.
