A case of 'The Emperor's New Clothes'

WHENEVER I behold a piece of modern, so-called art, such as that shown on the front page of last week's Dispatch and now adorning our town centre, I am reminded of Hans Christian Andersen's story of the Emperor's new suit of clothes – a tale with the power of a Biblical parable.

Readers may recall that it centres on two charlatans who offer to make the Emperor a suit from a thread so fine that only those of sufficient intelligence are able to actually see it.

Thus, when he 'wears it' nobody dares acknowledge his nakedness for fear of being dubbed a fool.

It takes an innocent child to exclaim "the Emperor has nothing on".

This shakes everyone out of their stupidity and makes them all realise they have been cleverly deceived.

While the so-called intelligentsia may endlessly debate the dubious merits of this piece of art, the rest of us mere plebeians may conclude that it has about as much artistic merit as Tracey Emin's unmade bed.
