Letter: Don’t forget you have obligations

In response to Councillor Chris Baron’s article last week trying to justify his actions at the extraordinary planning committee on 19th March for the Rolls Royce development, I would like to remind him of his obligations as a local councillor.

“Members of the Council are democratically accountable to residents of their ward.

“Their overriding duty is to the whole community, but they have a special duty to their constituents, including those who did not vote for them”.

On the issue of job creation Chris has repeatedly said 2000 jobs may be created - for the last year many people have asked him how he got to this figure, but alas like all politicians he as never come up with the answer.

The majority of Rolls Royce employees come from out of town mainly from the west side, using Long Lane/Watnall Road and once gate 2 is closed into Rolls , they then will after go further down Watnall Road to the by-pass to get to work.

Those of us that use Watnall Road will have a brief experience last week of traffic lights on Watnall Road and the delays getting into Hucknall was horrific, with traffic on long lane backing up to the bend at Watnall.

In the Dispatch several weeks ago you asked a representative from Rolls Royce on the prospect of how many jobs this proposal would create and they refused to comment.

There are 17 Councillors on the planning committee and with this very large project only 9 bothered to turn up in time to vote.

It will be interesting reading the minutes of this planning meeting, which at this moment in time have not been released in the public domain.

It was Councillor Chris Baron that stated in your paper at the time of the Wigwam playing fields development, that no more large building projects would happen in Hucknall !!!.

Does he have a vested interest in the building Industry with an alleged company that carries stone for a large building company?.

I hope all voters in Hucknall, especially in the West of Hucknall will remember the names of those Councillors who voted for this proposal, or did not even bother to turn up to the planning committee meeting.
