Over 1,000 caught in driver clampdown

Over 1,000 drivers in Nottinghamshire have been caught using a phone at the wheel or refusing to wear a seatbelt in just two weeks of a police campldown.

Nottinghamshire Police began a two month sustained enforcement campaign on April 1, with over 1,000 already caught within the first fortnight.

Chief Inspector Andy Charlton said: “Sadly this isn’t a surprise – despite similar campaigns in 2012 and 2013 - it shows a significant number of people still regard their addiction to their phone as more important than the safety of others and themselves.

“The number of people who still refuse to wear a seatbelt may come as a surprise. But if anyone believes that drivers have got that message then think again. A significant minority still haven’t. If you get into a car with a friend or relative who doesn’t wear a seatbelt please remind them of the consequences – you could be saving their life.”

Last year’s enforcement campaign, which ran at the same time of year, caught over 5,000 drivers and this year it looks as though that number will be even higher

Chief Insp Charlton added: “It’s not too late to change your habits. Don’t get distracted by your phone and always wear your seatbelt.”
