Pat’s campaign success for mobility scooter at Mansfield bus station

When Pat Rathbone heard the new station, on Quaker Way, was opening without access to mobility scooters for the disabled, she set her mind to bringing about change.

The 72-year-old, of Westfield Lane, is now celebrating after a year long battle to get Mansfield District Council to install the scooter and help the disabled shop around.

“When the bus station first opened, I couldn’t believe there were no scooters in place for the public,” she said.

“One of my neighbours said she needed one so that spurred me on.

“I think of other people all the time. I am 72 myself, I don’t need one a scooter at the moment but I might do in the future and there is lots of people right now that cannot get out and about as easily as me.

“I think it is ridiculous that it opened in the first place without this facility in place.”

Coun Sharon Adey, for Abbott, said Pat’s campaign has been a big success: “Tuesday saw the success of a mobility scooter put in place at the new bus station. Today she has a big smile and feels fabulous all her hard work has paid off. Change does happen if you get involved.”

Kate Allsop, portfolio holder for economic regeneration, added: “We listened to the concerns of people with mobility difficulties and worked closely with the bus station to come up with a solution.”
