Pensioners missing out on thousands

THOUSANDS of elderly people in Hucknall and Bulwell could be missing out on thousands of pounds worth of top-ups to their pensions, research has claimed.

As many as 36,000 elderly people in Nottinghamshire could be missing out on the Pension Credit scheme because they think they simply aren't eligible for the cash.

The total includes almost 5,000 in Ashfield, which includes Hucknall, and almost 8,000 in Nottingham, which includes Bulwell people.

The amounts of cash in question are considerable, with average awards of Pension Credit of around 40 per week and the possibility of awards being backdated for 12 months.

The Pension Service is writing to those who they believe may be missing out, but there is no need to wait for the letter. To find out if you or an elderly friend or relative is entitled to the extra money, call freephone 0800 991234.

If you or your partner is responsible for council tax, the Pension Service can also help you apply for housing benefit and council tax benefit at the same time.

Pension Reform Minister Stephen Timms said: "All it takes is a call to help ensure that you get all of the money you're entitled to."

Pensioners who prefer to discuss their position in their own home can request a visit from the Nottinghamshire pension team by calling 0845 6060265.
