Ashfield District Council leader, Coun Jason Zadrozny, said: “Thanks to an incredible amount of hard work and planning dozens of hospitals across the country have now given the first vaccines to those aged 80 and over, and care home staff.

“This is a turning point for the virus and our battle against it.

"I know many Ashfield residents will see it as the first step back to a normal life.

"The vaccine is safe and highly effective.

"I’d encourage all residents to have it when it’s their turn, but we have to remember that this is a marathon and not a sprint.

"While the roll out will move quickly once we get into 2021, it’s important that we continue to follow hands, face, space and social distancing to protect ourselves and others.

“The council will assist with the rollout in any way we can.

"This includes providing venues in our community.

"The NHS will contact you directly when it is your turn to receive the vaccine.

"If you have elderly relatives, particularly over 80, I’d ask that over the coming weeks you check that they have received their letter and help them in booking their vaccine.

“I am proud to lead a council in a district that has shown incredible community spirit throughout the pandemic.

"I’m hopeful the worst is now over and that a more normal life for us all is on the horizon. The vaccine is a game changer for us all.”

Ashfield MP, Lee Anderson, said: “Ashfield residents and businesses have shown an enormous amount of courage and resilience throughout this pandemic but now there is light at the end of this very long tunnel.

“It has been a difficult year for all of us, but I want to say a massive thank you to all our local healthcare providers, voluntary groups and our local councils who have stepped up during the most difficult time in my lifetime.

"As vaccinations are rolled out across the whole of the country the NHS will get in touch with you when it is your turn.

"Please step forward and do your bit for the country and the people of Ashfield.”
