Lauren Tanner will feature in a radio adaptation of DH Lawrence's The Rainbow.

Lauren Tanner, nine, has entered the world of show business after being selected to perform in a brand new radio adaptation of DH Lawrence’s The Rainbow this year.

The talented youngster, who attends Broomhill Junior School, will play the part of a young Anna Lensky in the upcoming BBC Radio 4 production.

Lauren landed the part after undergoing years of performing arts training at the Television Workshop in Nottingham.

Proud mum Janine Tanner said: “She has been attending the workshop for almost two years now and this is her first acting role.

"Lauren is only nine years old and was the youngest cast member.

"She did fantastic and really impressed the director.

"Taking part has been a huge confidence boost for Lauren.”

DH Lawrence's The Rainbow tells the story of the Brangwen family, a lineage of farmers, and how their familial relations morph during the Industrial Revolution.

The story follows the passionate lives of three generations of the Nottinghamshire family as they have children and conform to an increasingly capitalist society.

Due to some of the book’s mature content, the novel was tried in an obscenity trial in 1915 and more than 1,000 copies were confiscated.

But despite the harsh reception Lawrence’s book received at the time, The Rainbow is praised by many critics today and the new radio production aims to celebrate the author’s work.

Lauren recorded her part in the play using equipment at home at the end of last month.

Mum Janine added: "She’s never really done anything like this before but we got the script and practiced a lot.

"And then she was just a natural on the day. It was brilliant.”

The budding actress hopes to go on to star in more radio and television productions in future. She loves watching British comedies and is inspired by female comedians.

Janine said: "She’s very funny herself – she really likes to make people laugh.”

The first episode of the DH Lawrence’s The Rainbow will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday, June 20, at 3pm.
