Laura Robinson, 42, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April and is now midway through her treatment cycles of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

And to mark National Breast Cancer Awareness Day on October 21, Laura and her family decided to organise a big #WearItPink-themed event at the Hideout pub in the town with a cake sale, raffle and pink drinks.

And the town responded so well, she has already raised £1,400 for the charity Breast Cancer Now and they are hoping they might yet make it to £1,500.

"I was worried that one point it was just going to be us there with a shedload of cake and prizes but it ended up with people queueing the whole length of the pub for everything.

"It was peak time and with friends and family and the public, it was just brilliant.

"People really did rally round to support us and to raise £1,400 from a cake sale raffle is fantastic.”

The event was not just about raising money for research into cancer but also about raising awareness of the disease and counselling and support that is on offer.

Laura continued: “Breast Cancer Now does all that and it was about the whole package really.

"Cancer really does affect different people in different ways.”

Laura is now planning further fundraising ventures and has her sights set on doing next year’s London Marathon – if she can get in.

She said: "I didn’t get in through the normal ballot so I’ve applied to Breast Cancer Now to see if I can get in as a charity runner.

"But either way, I’m sure Beckie at the Hideout and my family would want to do something like this again next year.

"My partner and my family have also been brilliant and that was the main objective, to have fun and raise awareness and it was very humbling on that front.”

Laura also thanked the more than 130 local businesses and cake makers who contributed to the raffle and bake sale, as well as Vicki Lee-Robinson, Carol Lomas, Sharon Robinson, Liv Bragg and Beckie Murray and Nic from The Hideout.”
