Rumours have been swirling around that a new medical facility for the town was being planned after resurfacing work started taking place on the car park near Wilkos earlier this year.

And now, Coun Jason Zadrozny, leader of Ashfield District Council, has confirmed that this work was indeed in preparation for construction to begin once all the necessary applications have been approved.

The plans will see a two-storey modern medical centre with GP services, nursing and minor operation services and social care facilities.

And Coun Zadrozny (Ash Ind) said the new centre was great news for Hucknall

He said: "We're delighted that this is going ahead.

"We still need to formally submit and approve the plans but that won't be an issue as we're all in favour of it.

"Hucknall badly needs this new facility and this will be a huge boost to the town.

"If you look at the all the new housing that has gone up around the area in the last few years, it's left Hucknall creaking at the edges.

"Having this brand new centre will mean people in the town will actually now be able to get a GP appointment when they need it and not be left waiting for weeks as some are at the moment.

"That's the whole point of the NHS, it is there for people at the point of need and that will now be the case for Hucknall people.

"I should also say that this new centre does not mean that the car park is going though.

"We are ensuring that the plans mean we do not take too much car park away as we know that is important for people too.

Coun Zadrozny also paid tribute to the work of Hucknall councilllors, particularly Coun Dave Shaw, who have campaigned for the medical centre for the last two years.

He continued: "Dave Shaw has done a lot of background work, but all Hucknall councillors have played their parts.

"And having this new centre in the middle of town will bring ancillary benefits to Hucknall as well.

"People may have their medical appointments but then they will hopefully then take the opportunity to visit the market or other shops in the town and help boost the local economy.”
