Police to wear cameras in new campaign

Nottinghamshire Police will deploy officers wearing body cameras as part of their Alliance Against Violence campaign.

The campaign was launched this and forms part of the force’s strategy on violent crime.

It encompasses hate crime, robbery, domestic violence and crimes which take place during the night time economy and in public spaces.

The cameras will be used when appropriate, such as in the night time economy when officers will meet and greet members of the public at transport hubs.

The equipment will be visible and officers will explain what they are and whether they’re in use, if possible.

Although there has been seen an overall reduction in crime in recent years, the number of violent crimes have started to rise. Last year, between July 2012 to June 2013, there were 13,217 instances of violent crime. Of these 7,106 resulted in injury.

Part of the police action in the coming weeks will include licensing teams carrying out checks, patrols of violent microbeats, offender management, repeat victim focus, engaging with neighbourhoods and communities, welcoming people coming into the city at bus and train stations, engaging with hen and stag party groups at hotels, and linking in with students.

Chief Insp Shaun Ostle said: “The cameras will be used during some of the action involved in our campaign both as a deterrent but also as an evidence gathering tool.

“We want to reinforce that we are not prepared to tolerate aggressive behaviour which can spoil evenings for residents and visitors to Nottinghamshire.

“Several Forces are using cameras in differing degrees and seeing a reduction in crime – something our campaign is committed to doing.”
