£5,000 charity boost ‘run up’ by students

Encouraged by their teachers, 760 students congregated on the athletics track – many of them in fancy dress and wearing the names of those they were running for inscribed on their bibs.

Music was supplied via speakers erected track-side, meaning it had the look and feel of a carnival.

Running side by side, staff and students cheered each other on all the way to the finish line.

“We are very proud of our students for running the Race for Life to raise money for cancer awareness,” said year seven achievement leader Helen Frost.

“Having run it with them, we can vouch for the length of the race and the difficult weather conditions running into the wind!

“They all did extremely well and we are absolutely thrilled to have raised such a fantastic amount of money for such a worthwhile cause.”

Laura Bainbridge, year eight achievement leader, added: “This is the first time that pupils at Ashfield School have completed the Race for Life and it definitely won’t be the last.

“The atmosphere was great and the support that pupils and parents have shown towards such a good cause has been staggering.

“Thank you to all who took part and made the event such an enjoyable and successful afternoon.

“We’re certain this will become an annual event and look forward to seeing how much students can raise next year.”
