Rainworth couple’s dream holiday nightmare

A Rainworth couple whose dream holiday was ruined by gastric illness contracted at a hotel in Sharm El Sheikh have vowed never to return to the resort again.

Phil and Chris Turley had booked a short stay at the Sol Verginia Sharm Resort in Egypt followed by a one week cruise in November 2012.

But, just two days into the trip, both were struck down by stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea and fever.

Said Phil: “The first evening meal did not feel very good - the place felt scruffy and grubby - but we thought we would stick it out and see what the cruise was like.

“The staff did not take unfinished plates of food away, they just put the next dish on top of it.

“After lunch the next day we were both vomiting big time so we stayed in the room but we were worrying because we had the cruise coming up.”

Phil and Chris, both aged 67, were half way into their cruse by the time they began to feel better and had missed many of the highlights, including the Red Sea, Jordan and Petra.

But the misery followed the hapless pair back home, as the virus they had contracted lingered in their stomachs to continually plague them during the Christmas and New Year which followed.

The Rainworth parents of four were recently awarded £3,800 in compensation after pursuing a claim against their tour operator through holiday illness claim solicitors Your Holiday Claims.

Phil, an ex-fireman, said: “We will never go back to Sharm El Sheikh again and, with hindsight, we should have gone to a different hotel straight away.

“I would advise anyone thinking of booking a holiday to check their hotel’s reviews on Trip Advisor first, because when I did so afterwards a lot of people had complained about how poor the food was.

“I just want people to know what happened to us on that holiday and hope to save others from going through what we went through.”
