Gardeners young and old attended the event, which took place in the village hall from 3-4pm on Saturday.

Organisers of the Ravenshead Garden Society show said they had introduced special categories this year to try and encourage more youngsters to get into gardening.

And children wowed the judges with their entries in the ‘decorated plant pot’ and ‘vegetable sculpture’ sections.

Secretary Irene Chapman said: “We had a brilliant turn-out from local people and we were particularly pleased with all the young people who took part, as we are really keen to encourage more youngsters to get into gardening and to join our society.

“There was a wide range of entries this year - some people had even grown grapes, which was incredible.”

Other gardeners showed off their horticultural achievements in a range of categories for flowers, plants and fruit and vegetables.

There was also a special ‘man in the kitchen award’ - with gentlemen from the village competing to produce the best coffee kisses.

The group, which has around a hundred members who all pay £1 per year, held its first show in the village in 1946 and meets six times a year at St Peter’s Church lounge.
