Sainsbury’s store plan scuppered once more

The authority threw out the application last year over concerns raised by Nottinghamshire County Council over highway safety, with the supermarket chain resubmitting plans earlier this year.

But the authority has again rejected the application - stating that the company had not done enough to make the carriageway safe at the junction of Nottingham Road and Main Road in the village.

“The proposed development would lead to an increase in turning and manoeuvring at the existing vehicle accesses on a heavily congested junction during peak hours, causing traffic dangers and difficulties on the adjoining highways for both drivers and pedestrians,” the planning document states.

Planners also said that the application still did not allow enough space for the manoeuvring of customer vehicles on the site, and additional problems would be caused by customers attempting to turn right out of the site.

Ravenshead Parish Council had objected to the plans, which involved the demolition of an existing car salesroom, because they felt that they would impact on other retail businesses in the village and restrict access to a right of way.

Sainsbury had proposed increased safety measures at the site and a restriction on cars attempting to turn right.
