The warning states: “Slow-moving, heavy showers which have been developing during the late morning and early afternoon are becoming more widespread and will continue to affect some areas through the rest of this afternoon onwards into this evening before only slowly starting to ease and die out.”

A chief forecaster for the Met Office said: “Where these heavy showers occur, localised accumulations of 15 to 25 mm in an hour and perhaps 30-40 mm in two or three hours are likely.

“Thunder and lightning is also possible, though not to the extent which was seen around the UK earlier this week. Finally note that as is often the case with heavy showers, some parts of the area enclosed within this warning will miss the showers and remain dry.”

The ‘yellow warning’ lasts until 9pm tonight (June 10).
