Shirebrook: School band calls the tune alongside famous orchestra

The youngsters will link up with the Manchester-based maestros and the Shirebrook Unison Band to perform a unique concert celebrating the history of the town.

The exciting performance is scheduled for 19th July and is part of a bigger project run in conjunction with Bolsover District Council, with a film also being made containing locals’ pictures and memories.

The two bands and the Hallé - who will form a 100-strong orchestra - will produce the film’s backing track.

“We have played concerts as a school band before never done anything this big before and it’s one of the biggest things to happen at the school for years,” said Adam Case, head of music at Shirebrook Academy.

“Everyone is really looking forward to it and it’s an amazing opportunity and a privilege for us to be involved.

“It shows the pupils how high they can set their aspirations and that the sky really is the limit.”

The money used to commission the project has come from the council and additional funding from Orchestras Live.

“When we commissioned this project we knew it would be special, but to give the pupils the chance to work alongside one of the best orchestra’s in the world, then that is a truly memorable experience not to be missed,” said the council’s cabinet member for social inclusion, coun Ann Syrett.

“Everyone involved has thrown themselves into the project and has been having great fun along the way. But what we have also seen is the creative talent some of our young pupils have and this will only be improved by the fact that they will be working with the Hallé from March.”
