Spate of burglaries in Newstead

RESIDENTS of Newstead have been urged to be on their guard after a spate of burglaries in the village.

The warning came from the chairman of the parish council, Coun Trish Wise, who said villagers must keep their eyes open for anything suspicious.

She said: "We are not going to stand for this. If anyone sees anything that looks suspicious, do not hesitate to ring the police and report it.

"Look out for people who do not fit in the area."

The meeting also heard about a bright orange van that was seen driving along Markham Street at around 3.30 am.

Pc Brian Newsome told a parish council meeting they were keen to trace the van because a theft of diesel in the area was being investigated.

Pc Newsome also urged people to be vigilant and not to be afraid to report anything to the police, who can be contacted on 0115 9670999.
