Suggs brings Our House down

The legendary Ska musician had just popped in for a drink or two at Leeming Street’s andwhynot after performing at the Palace Theatre.

Suggs’ backing singer was performing a few numbers with the bar and restaurant’s resident guitarist James Clark.

But senior general manager Kevin Rogers said madness erupted in the room when the star jumped up on stage and joined in.

“It was absolutely brilliant,” said Kevin. “He is a musical hero of mine.

“But what happened that night was one of those once-in-a-lifetime things.

“He is such a charming guy and a really nice chap - very down to earth.”

Suggs performed a few tracks, including My Girl and Cecillia to a delighted Mansfield audience.

“He started with Cecilia,” said Kevin, “but messed that up at the end, so launched straight into My Girl, which everybody sang along to.

“James was in his element too - especially when Suggs’ manager took his details to pass on.”

Kevin had recognised the singer when he popped into the bar earlier in the afternoon so went over to say hello.

And when the Sussex-born artist responded with free tickets to that night’s gig he was glad that he had.

“The show was spot-on,” said Kevin. “And poignant at times, like when he talked about his search for his long-lost father.

“I am just over the moon - as a long-term fan it was an awesome experience. To have someone like that perform in your bar - you cannot buy things like that.”

Andwhynot holds its open mic acoustic night every Tuesday.

If you are a performer you must attend by 8.30pm to register. Performances go on from 9pm-12pm.

Under 18s above the age of 16 are welcome with a responsible adult.
