Sutton schoolkids given health and fitness boost

Pupils at two local primary schools have seen significant increases in their health and fitness levels thanks to a new programme which has been piloted in Ashfield.

Key stage 2 students at Mapplewells and Hillocks Primary Schools took part in the six-week Sporting FUNdamentals programme, run by Everyone Active, last term.

The children took part in a short fitness test and healthy eating quiz at the start and finish of the course - and the results showed a 14 per cent and 21 per cent increase in health and fitness levels respectively.

Hillocks headteacher Louise Regan said: “We were honoured to have the opportunity to take part in the Sporting FUNdamentals programme - all the children and parents were very positive about it.

“It was a brilliant experience and I would recommend it to all.”

The programme gave children the chance to take part in 14 different activities and sports, as well helping them understand the basics of healthy eating during weekly sessions about diet and nutrition.

“The programme’s aim is to ensure that very child remains more active, more often ultimately achieving long life participation in activity,” added Michelle Wykes, community engagement officer for Everyone Active in Ashfield.
