VIDEO: Angry scenes as suspected paedophile appears at court

There were angry scenes outside court today when a man charged with historic child sex abuse offences appeared before magistrates in Mansfield.

Christopher Metcalfe, 68, of Cross Lane, Blidworth was confronted by angry protestors outside the courthouse on Rosemary Street this afternoon, and at one point a woman with Metcalfe became embroiled in angry confrontation with one member of the public.

Metcalfe also flicked ‘V’ signs at the protestors as they heckled him when he left the building. He also tried to hide his face with a newspaper.

He is the first person to be arrested as part of Operation Xeres - the police’s investigation into abuse at children’s homes dating back 50 years.

He faces seven allegations, including three counts of rape of female under 16, three counts of indecent assault of a girl under 14 and buggery of a woman.

All charges relate to between 1982 and 1987.

A number of protestors sat in the public gallery during the short hearing where the case was committed to crown court.

Repsresenting Metcalfe, Bill Soughton told the court that his client would be pleading not guilty to all counts.

He is now due to appear at Derby Crown Court on December 7, where he facing two more allegations of indecent assault dating back to 1979.
