Ministers considered declaring a state of emergency and using the army to transport coal during the bitter miners’ strike of, 1984, new papers have revealed.
The documents, released under the 30-year-rule, show that the outcome of the bitter dispute that saw the Notts coalfield as one of the main battlegrounds, was by no means certain.
