Confident Town boss shrugs off Trophy exit

CONFIDENT manager Bryan Chambers shrugged off Hucknall Town's latest setback by promising to lead them to Blue Square North safety.

Town were knocked out of the FA Trophy by underdogs Stourbridge after having player/coach Chris Timons sent off as early as the 18th minute.

But although the exit has cost The Yellows much-needed revenue, through prize money, he believes it could be a blessing in disguise.

For now they can concentrate on their relegation battle.

And Chambers believes he has seen enough from his players to know that they can beat the drop.

The former Eastwood Town boss told the Dispatch: "To be honest, I was absolutely delighted with the performance against Stourbridge.

"It was brilliant, especially considering how we only had ten men for the most part.

"We were cruising at 1-0 up and we also dominated the second half. The lads worked their socks off and we could have extended our lead when we were winning 2-1.

"At the end of the game, I sat the players down and told them they had to be men about the defeat. At least it didn't happen in the league.

"I came here to save the club from relegation and I can now concentrate solely on that.

"And from what I have seen, I know we will be OK. We are right on target. The team are looking better all the time.

"I am very, very confident I will get them out of trouble."

Chambers also revealed that his assistant, former Notts County star Richard Liburd, had picked up on an area where the team needs improving.

"The lads are physically fit. But Richard pointed out that they are not mentally fit," the Geordie said.

"They switch off too easily and that means we can get caught out.

"But it is something we are working on and I am happy with the bunch of lads I have got.

"The Telford game will be really hard. They have not lost in the league for a while but I am still confident.

"They have two very good managers in Rob Smith and his assistant Larry Chambers, whom I have known for a long time.

"They will have done their homework and will know all about us. But I have done all my work as well and I know all about them.

"We are not frightened of any team. We are a big team and can mix it when we need to. But we can pass the ball about as well.

"I think we have come a long way in a very short time. We are further ahead than I thought we would be."
