County athletics championships: Warner hits record-breaking form

BRILLIANT Hucknall runner Michael Warner was in record-breaking form on his way to a trio of gold medals in the Nottinghamshire AAA championships.

Seventeen-year-old Warner, of Stainsborough Road, ranks as one of the best young athletes in the country and boasts a stunning array of medals to his name.

And once again he was one of the stars of the championships at Harvey Hadden Stadium in Bilborough last weekend.

Competing in the under-20 mens' age group, Warner stormed to glory in the 200m in a personal-best (PB) time of 21.9 seconds, which was disappointingly one tenth of a second outside the championship best.

But he wasn't to be denied the record in the 400m, racing home in a PB of 48.1 seconds to shave 0.4 seconds off the previous best.

The times qualify him for the English Schools' Championship later this year, although he can only compete in one event.

His sparkling form continued at Harvey Hadden when he joined up with Notts AC teammates Lewis Summer-Rell, Matt Madden and Tom Offler to take gold in the 4x100m relay.

The results cement Warner's reputation as someone who could fill the spikes of Hucknall's 110m Olympic hurdler Andy Turner as a potential star on the world stage.

Since breaking his leg playing football in 2004, Warner was been irrepressible and has gone on to bag a succession of high-profile medals.

In 2005 he took gold in the 4x100m relay, silvers in the 100m and 200m and bronze in the 400m at the county AAA championships.

In 2006 he took gold in the 400m at the Nottinghamshire County Schools Championship and silvers in the 200m and 400m at the AAAs.

He followed this up with his most successful season last year with golds in the 200m and 400m at the AAAs.

In 2007 he also won the 400m at the Midland Counties Championships in Birmingham and the English Schools' Championships.

Warner, who is studying A-levels in the sixth form at Hucknall's Holgate Comprehensive School, also earned a call-up to represent England.
