Patel scored exactly 100 as the home side reached 382 before being bowled out, leaving Durham a victory target of 215. Graham Onions returned the best analysis for the visitors, taking three for 86.

Chris Read fell to Ryan Pringle’s off-spin soon after lunch, hitting into the hands of deep square leg for 15. His departure left Patel within sight of three figures and he reached the landmark from 154 balls, having hit 12 fours and a six.

His enthusiastic celebrations were understandable but short-lived as he proceeded to help Rushworth’s next delivery into the hands of Onions at long leg.

Ryan Pringle bowled both Brett Hutton and Jake Ball, to finish with three for 93 and Luke Wood was last out, skying Scott Borthwick after making 35.
