Six-a-side day organised for cancer cause

The day is being organised in aid of Cancer Research UK and the winning team on the day will be awarded the original Bert Pailing Trophy - an esteemed prize with a rich history in the area.

Organiser and ex-Southwell Cricket Club player Clive Linley said: “Six-a-side is exciting stuff as there are only four fielders and just one designated wicket keeper and each fielder bowls just one over.

“So your average person could go down and enjoy it.

“Back in the 1970s this format of the game was very popular in the Nottinghamshire area before league cricket being played both on a Saturday and Sunday caused interest to dwindle.”

The teams entered are Southwell, Welbeck Colliery, Cuckney, Balderton, Calverton, Caunton, Collingham and Radcliffe-On-Trent.

“Clive added: “These competitions were keenly fought over in the area, with a trophy donated by Mr Pailing of Upton, a well known local sports personality whose son, Barry, become the chairman of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club years later.

“The idea of resurrecting this tournament has been very well received.”

As well as the cricket there will be a barbecue and licensed bar, tombola and donkey dump game with a substantial cash prize.

Teams pay a fee of £10 per player to enter and all proceeds from the event will go to Cancer Research UK.

The event starts at 1pm and admission is free.
