Csomor goalputs Linby incounty cup final

n TEAM spirit and teamwork earned LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE LADIES UNDER-10S a 1-0 win at Sherwood and a place in the final of the Notts FA Girls Shield against Netherfield.

In a fantastic tie of good-quality football, the only goal came in the first half when the ball broke for Courteney Csomor, who kept a cool head to loft a shot over the ‘keeper from outside the box.

Sherwood were well-organised and determined. But Linby were always the more dangerous side with Chloe Vernon giving a brilliant display in the centre of midfield.

Defensive duo Ellie Betteridge and Abbie Truman also shone, with the player-of-the-match award going to the former for a true captain’s performance.

n INJURY-hit LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE LADIES UNDER-16S were on the receiving end of a 9-1 mauling when they visited Ilkeston in the Notts Girls League.

Unable to field a full side, they showed commendable team-spirit and held out until the 20th minute.

But once the floodgates had been opened, Ilkeston ran in four goals in the first period and five more in the second.

Linby finally came alive in the last 15 minutes and scored a consolation goal from a move started by player-of-the-match Louise Rivett. Her beautifully weighted pass found Charlotte Turner whose shot rebounded to Becky Garland to tap home.

n A HAT-trick from Rebecca Lane was not enough to prevent LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE LADIES UNDER-14S sliding to an unlucky 4-3 defeat at Sheepbridge in the Notts Girls League.

At times, Linby outplayed the home side and went ahead when Lane converted a terrific corner from Jasmin Bear.

Sheepbridge replied by going 2-1 up before Lane cheekily lobbed the ‘keeper to level and struck again early in the second half.

Sadly the home side not only equalised but also grabbed the winner just two minutes from time while Linby were reorganising after a couple of injuries.

n DISTURBING scenes among parents on the touchline marred a 2-2 draw for LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE LADIES UNDER-13S YELLOW against Stretton in the Notts Girls League.

The referee was forced to take the unprecedented step of stopping the game to speak to a Stretton fan for swearing. While other visiting supporters were spotted openly laughing at an injured Linby player receiving treatment.

To their credit, neither side let the hostility spread to the game, which saw Linby battle back well from 2-0 down.

After a goalless first half, in which the Stretton ‘keeper made several impressive saves, the visitors applied all the pressure and deservedly took the lead.

Linby’s problems intensified when goalkeeper Eleni Gospel had to go off with an ankle injury. And it wasn’t long before her replacement, Sophie Whitley, was letting in the second goal.

However Linby responded immediately with a goal from captain Alice Clarke. And they snatched an equaliser with virtually the last kick of the match when Shannon Garlick marauded up front.

n AFTER weeks of cancellations and frozen pitches, LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE LADIES UNDER-13S BLUE finally came out of the cold with a rousing 5-0 win at Clifton in the Notts Girls League.

Linby were ahead from the fifth minute when striker Katrina Bloomer intelligently found player-of-the-match Charlotte Nolan to score after good work from trusty midfielder Paige Rogers.

They were then indebted to two excellent saves by stand-in goalkeeper Lauren Betteridge before Nolan went on to complete a hat-trick.

First she latched on to a pass from Elle Croucher and then she converted a superb cross from the same player.

Kirsty Peat made it 4-0, keeping her cool after a thunderbolt from the creative Maddy Cusack had been saved. And Betteridge stepped out of goal to wrap up the scoring, following up a flying shot from Rogers.

n DOMINANT ROLLS-ROYCE LEISURE UNDER-12 GIRLS helped themselves to another comfortable win in Division Two of the Notts Girls League.

This time Rolls licked Castle Donington 7-0 to remain one point behind the leaders whom they play next month.

Chloe Moore was queen of the Castle with a hat-trick, while the lethal Rhenna Draper netted two more goals and both Keeley Maycock and Katie Prendergast scored one apiece.

n A HAT-trick from Courtney Evans helped LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE LADIES UNDER-11S to a 5-3 victory at Clifton in a Notts Girls League top-of-the-table clash.

Striker Evans had Linby in front from the opening minutes after a neat pass through the defence from Amber Denny.

It wasn’t long before she coolly slotted home her second and although Clifton cut the deficit with a well-worked goal, Evans completed her treble from the penalty spot before half-time.

Clifton turned up the pressure in the second period and were rewarded when a thunderous strike took a slight deflection.

But Linby refused to panic and bounced back with goals from Sianna Bennett, who ran half the pitch to drive home, and Lauren Wilson, who smashed a shot into the roof of the net after a first-time ball from midfield dynamo Alice West.

n HAPPY LINBY COLLIERY WELFARE LADIES UNDER-9S have one hand on the Notts Girls League championship trophy after a goalless draw against their main rivals, Vernon.

With four fixtures remaining, Linby remain level on points with a crucial game in hand.

The locals hit a post early on but it was end-to-end stuff and they relied heavily on goalkeeper and player-of-the-match Chloe Benniston, who pulled off some excellent saves.

As the deadlock continued, neither side gave an inch and both defences held strong.
