FOOTBALL - GLAPWELL LOSE DERBY/LOCAL ROUND-UP

GLAPWELL could have no complaints as they came away empty-handed from Saturday s local derby, losing 2-1 against a resurgent Alfreton Town, who preserved their 100 per cent league record in 2001 with their sixth successive Premier Division victory.

For the second game running, the Hall Corner side were without suspended captain Jamie Morgan and work-tied left centre-back Gary Page.

And that proved vital as, before their biggest gate of the season, they were often overrun by Jason Maybury s outfit, who looked a far more accomplished side than the one which Glapwell defeated in the League Cup at North Street in November.

The visitors produced a dream start when, after two minutes, Gary Castledine s through ball saw Caine Cheetham bearing down on goal and stroking confidently past Neil Etheridge.

And the Reds threatened to swamp their hosts with Cheetham, Chris Dolby and Castledine enjoying good chances before Glapwell brought the scores level on 13.

Following a Maybury foul on the edge of the box, acting skipper Freddie Morgan directed an excellent free-kick through the Red wall and low past the unsighted Paul Varney s outstretched right-hand.

Then Robbie Clarke found himself clear on goal in the penalty area from an intelligent through ball soon after but his half-volley flew well over the bar.

But, as the game continued at a breakneck speed, the visitors came closest to regaining the lead.

Firstly, on 19 minutes, a Castledine free-kick from the right required vital goal-line interceptions from Etheridge and Chris Taylor to prevent Steve Heath and Phil Stafford finding the back of the net, while Cheetham and Maybury fired efforts off target from within the penalty area.

Glapwell s best chance seemed to be when the game lost its flow and rhythm with their most likely avenue for goals being from set plays.

Brendan Yates downward header was easily smothered by Varney after Lee Whetton s cross from a blocked Danny Scott free-kick, before Clarke and Taylor both spurned half-opportunities from dead-ball situations.

As the game recovered its flow, Alfreton finished the half the stronger, making the number of clear-cut opening period chances they had made to nine but failing to add to their early strike.

Dolby was the first guilty party, firing over having stole in between Taylor and Etheridge after Cheetham cleverly dummied allowing Maybury s through-ball to run on.

Then, a suicidal backpass by John Purdy was cut out by Cheetham, but the advancing Etheridge produced an excellent block to deny the striker.

The second period began in similar fashion with John Redfern needing to make a vital goal-line clearance to deny Dolby almost from the re-start.

Glapwell s best chances, meanwhile, continued to arrive from set pieces. A quick 51st-minute free-kick by Freddie Morgan saw the visiting defence flat-footed, but Yates could not connect properly with the ball and saw the effort go wide before, six minutes later, a Scott free-kick was headed into Varney s arms by Clarke.

Meanwhile, in open play, it was Alfreton who were the more flattering. On the hour, only an excellent goal-line block by Etheridge denied Stafford from two yards out after substitute James Elliott had beaten Simon Poxon for pace down the left.

But, the reprieve was only a temporary one when, on 65, Alfreton made the breakthrough in a classic counter-attack move, Adam Fretwell feeding Dolby who cut inside and fired low past Etheridge from just outside the area.

The hosts continued to fight but could not produce anything clear-cut to forge an equaliser, Ryan Pownall failing to connect to a 75th-minute Whetton ball into the box was the closest they came, despite pushing Freddie Morgan up front to make an attacking three for the latter part of the game.

Indeed, it was Alfreton who were nearest to adding to the scoreline when a poor free-kick by Paul Dolby saw the visitors produce another counter-attack, Cheetham shaking off Taylor on the half-way line, but the defender recovered well to put the striker off as he advanced into the box where he shot wide.

Clipstone 2 Heanor Town 2

CLIPSTONE led Heanor Town twice at the Lido on Saturday, but in the end they were gratefult for a missed penalty which preserved them a point.

Welfare moved in front in the 11th minute when Matt Millns punished the failure of three defenders to clear Jimmy Garner s cross.

The Lions hauled themselves level five minutes before the break through Mark Whitton, who converted a Huntington corner.

But Welfare regained the lead on the stroke of half time, with Millns adding his second amid Heanor claims that keeper Fletcher had been fouled.

However, Heanor again drew level, this time from the penalty spot. Huntington, running in on goal from Whitton s through ball, was brought down, and although Andy Norwood superbly saved Ben Goddard s spot kick, the referee ordered it to be retaken, and this time Goddard made no mistake.

Two minutes later Adams was brought down in the area, and Heanor had another penalty, but this time Goddard s shot rebounded to safety off the angle, to Welfare s relief.

Cox League Cup round III

Welbeck MW 2 Shirebrook Tn 5

A FIRST half hat-trick by Dave Davies helped Shirebrook Town to a local derby League Cup triumph at Welbeck and set up a mouthwatering quarter-final tie against arch-rivals Lincoln Moorlands.

But despite the reverse, Welbeck also played their part in an enthralling contest.

The home side found the long throws of Jordan Johnson difficult to contain.

And from that source Davies had already had a shot well saved by Shaun Morris and Lee Widdowson had been denied by a last gasp Dave Stevenson tackle, before yet another such throw in the 19th minute enabled Davies to swivel on the edge of the area and drill home a powerful low drive.

Welbeck had their moments too, Glen Nattriss heading Andy Kirk s corner narrowly wide, and debutant Alfreton Town Academy keeper Gavin Saxby punching another corner clear of a crowded area.

Craig Shaw, restored to outfield after a couple of stand-in goalkeeping appearances, went close for Shirebrook, as did Dave Chambers for Welbeck, before the visitors doubled their lead on 33 minutes.

Morris had done well to push a fierce Davies free kick around the post, but from the corner Jordan Johnson was on hand to slot in at the back post.

Four minutes later good work by Simon Johnson on the left enabled Adie Carter to lay back for Davies to leave Morris with no chance.

And Town went four up from Davies spot kick a minute before the break following David Pell s foul tackle on Simon Johnson.

Despite the deficit, Welbeck came back strongly in the second half, and Stevenson forced the towering Saxby into a superb low save, before the keeper then fingertipped a Damien Shakespeare free kick over the bar.

The game burst into life with three goals in five minutes, starting on 80, when Carter brought down Shakespeare from behind, and Chambers sent Saxby the wrong way from the spot.

Two minutes later Carter redeemed himself with a pinpoint long ball forward to Simon Johnson who beat his marker for pace and laid it across goal for Widdowson to tap home Town s fifth.

Saxby was in action again with two successive close range blocks, but Chambers forced the third attempt over the line for Welbeck s second.

Ripley Town 6 Blidworth MW 1

A YOUTHFUL Blidworth outfit arrived at the Brickyard Ground with high hopes, but they were stunned by an experienced Ripley side with several new players from higher leagues, writes Alan Whitworth.

Chances were missed at both ends in the first half hour, Overton and Robinson scorning openings which could have put Blidworth two up.

Ripley took a 34th-minute lead when Atkins parried Mabon s shot to the feet of Archbold who was left with a simple tap in.

The game exploded just before half time. Mabon beat the offside on 43 to put Allsopp in for Town s second, and a minute later Mabon himself found the net with a 35-yard screamer.

On the stroke of half time Clarke got one back following Robinson s free kick.

Ripley began the second half strongly with Mabon s second on 47, followed by Bush on 53 and Mabon s hat-trick goal on the hour.

Blidworth never gave up the cause, with debutant Carl Rose outstanding.

Teversal 1 Ollerton Town 1

With Teversal s Nottinghamshire Senior Cup quarter final now put back to 10th March, they returned to league action against improving Ollerton Town, writes Kevin Newton.

The home side showed their intentions from the off when Cockerill s effort in the first minute was tipped over the bar by Jordan in the Ollerton goal.

The workmanlike qualities of the visitors matched for the home side s flowing football, and the only goal attempts Teversal created were from distance, which Jordan dealt with without any problems, Andy Albrighton standing out in the visitors impressive defensive unit.

In the last five minutes of a lack lustre first half, both sides could have opened the scoring. Teversal s Hutchinson saw his excellently executed free kick clip the wrong side of the post with Jordan well beaten after 43 minutes.

Chris Booth then had Ollerton s first effort on goal as the break approached. But, found unmarked in the Teversal box by Chambers, he scuffed his effort and Parker easily saved.

Booth did make up for that effort at the end of the first half within free minutes of the restart, when he rose to plant the perfect header over the stranded Parker.

Teversal s young side kept their shape to try and get back into the game. But the more they pressured, the deeper the stoic Ollerton defensive line dropped.

Jordan saved well from Hutchinson and Hollingworth before Teversal equalised on 62.

Again Cockerill was instrumental, producing the cross for Betts to head at goal only for Jordan to fumble it onto the bar. Varley then saw his effort hit the bar again, but Shipley was on hand to roll home his third goal in as many games to level the score.

Forest Town 0 North Notts 0

Conditions were near perfect for this local derby game - bright sunshine, firm playing surface, slight breeze, giving rise to the promise of an exciting game.

In fact it turned out to be a very scrappy affair. Forest Town played with enough fight and determination to ensure the 5-0 drubbing of just two weeks ago was not repeated.

Town had ex-Antler Shaun Vincent playing up front, but he had few chances. to shine, whileNotts had new defender Ryan Wall on the bench.

Both sides had their chances with Antlers` skipper Shane Turner having an excellent header acrobatically turned over by the Forest keeper and Walker and Short both going close.

Forest Town had a couple of long range efforts whistle over the top, and a 20-yard drive by Vincent comfortably saved by Steve Brown.

Andy Wooodcock should have sealed the points for Notts on 60 when put through by a defence-splitting pass from man of the match Turner, but he somehow managed to shoot wide with only the keeper to beat.

Forest Town will be happy with the point but Notts disappointed not to have gained all three.

On Saturday North Notts entertain Shardlow St James (3pm).

Rainworth 1 Linby 2

LINBY Colliery broke their Rainworth hoodoo to inflict a second successive home defeat on Sandy Pate s men, writes Les Lee.

Linby sounded an early warning when they created two good chances down the right in the first five minutes through Dave Elson. Rainworth failed to cut out the threat, and trailed 2-0 inside the first 20 minutes.

First, on 10 minutes, a free kick from the half way line was played out to the unmarked Elson, who carried the ball into the area and produced a clinical finish.

Then, 10 minutes later, poor defending on the right saw Linby break clear again, and this time the hard, low cross found Andy Start, who made no mistake at the far post.

Hide Ad

Rainworth did not manage to engineer a clear cut chance until the half-hour, when Paul Johnson crossed to Bobby Sharman a the far post, but his half-volley was cleared for a corner.

In the second half Linby were pushed back onto defence, and were never allowed to create any real threat, although they did defend well, and made it very difficult for Rainworth to open up enough opportunities to get anything out of the game.

The home side were unlucky in the opening five minutes when Sam Martin put Graham Thornley through, only to see his finish clear the bar.

With 15 minutes remaining Dean Sweeney s long through ball reached Anthony Shaw, whose overhead kick was pushed onto the post and behind for a corner by Linby keeper Steve Chadbourne.

Hide Ad

Rainworth finally broke their duck with 10 minutes left. A neat interchange between Thornley and Sweeney put in Shaw to fire home from inside the area.

The home side worked hard for an equaliser, but the Linby defence stood their ground to take the points and go second, one point above Rainworth who dropped to fourth.

Pelican 3 Southwell City 0

DEPLETED Southwell City missed the chance to capitalise as only one of the top five Senior Division sides managed to win, when they were sunk by three first half goals at Pelican.

Pelican started the game in top gear and scored within two minutes. A sweeping ball from left to right found Aaron Wright totally in the clear and he was able to get into the six yard box without anyone near him to beat Edwards who was totally exposed.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

It was the ninth minute before Nicholls was able to set Turner free on the right and his good early centre for Flynn was just inches too far for the striker to connect and cancel the Pelican lead.

City had two more chances to level. Nicholls won well in the air and Foss mistimed his clearance. Flynn anticipated well and got a firm contact on the ball, but keeper Jackson was just able to block the attempt. Nicholls was then able to get free himself but his attempted chip over the advancing keeper was also saved.

With 25 minutes gone Pelican won a corner which was badly defended by City on the near post. The ball was gathered by Chris Waddley who let fly and beat Dale Edwards with a fierce shot from a tight angle.

Five minutes later the game was put beyond City when Foss was left unmarked from another corner and was able to fire into the roof of the net from three yards.

City began the second half much better and took the game to Pelican. However, despite having more possession and playing in the Pelican half they were unable to break down the final defences of the home side, well organised at the back by skipper Kevin Waddley.

Two half chances fell to Nicholls, but his efforts were well saved by Jackson and although Flynn worked tirelessly for his team he was unable to break the deadlock.

l Elsewhere in the Senior Division Abacus kept their improved form going with a 4-3 victory over Notts Police, with goals from P. Stevenson 2, Peter Jones and Lee Simmons.

Police replied with a brace by Dean Bennett and one from Wayne Bennett.
