Former Mansfield Town winger Nathan Thomas looks set to put pen to paper for promoted Championship new boys Sheffield United.

He was due to have a medical at Bramall Lane today.

Thomas, 22, proved to be one of the few shining lights at Hartlepool United this season as they were relegated from the Football League and the Blades have given the youngster the chance to stay in League football, beating off competition from relegated Premier League Middlesbrough – Thomas’ home town club.

Thomas showed his skill as well as inconsistency at Mansfield before, midway through season 2015/16, asking for a move back to his native North-East as he was homesick – a request granted by then Stags boss Adam Murray.

Both Sheffield United and Middlesbrough this week had reported bids of £300,000 accepted for Thomas with Pools desperate for cash after being relegated from the Football League for the first time in their history.

Thomas picked Chris Wilder’s side because he felt he would have a greater chance of first team football.
