FRIDAY'S FORMER STAGS: Colin Calderwood

In this week's instalment of Friday's Former Stags we look at a former Scottish international centre-half Colin Calderwood.

Born in Stranraer in 1965, Calderwood got his first taste of football in England with the Stags in the early-80s. He made his debut for Mansfield Town in 1981 but all did not go as well as could be hoped.

Here’s how the Scottish FA recalls it: “He made his professional debut for Mansfield Town in 1981 but the event was somewhat spoiled by a registration mistake and the club had two points deducted.”

A memorable debut of sorts then for the Scot, who would go on and make a century of appearances for the Stags before his move to Swindon Town in 1985 for a reported £30,000.

After eight years with Swindon, where he racked up more than 400 appearances, Calderwood sealed a £1.25 million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in July 1993.

Calderwood played Premier League football at White Hart Lane for six years, representing Spurs 198 times during that period before brief spells at Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Notts County.

Calderwood then moved into management and enjoyed - at least initially - some success, guiding Northampton Town to promotion from League Two in 2006 before steering Forest back to the Championship in 2008.

He has had spells at Newcastle United (coach), Hibernian (manager) before reuniting with his old Spurs colleague Chris Hughton.

The duo have been one-two at Birmingham City, Norwich City and are currently looking ahead to the new Championship season with Brighton & Hove Albion.
