Hucknall Town want to play on if season can continue

Hucknall Town boss Andy Graves hopes the Yellows' season will be allowed to continue - but only when it's safe to do so.

The Yellows are among the clubs in steps three to six of the National League System currently taking part in the Football Association's survey which asks non-league clubs to state how they would prefer to conclude the 2020-21 campaign.

Last season football below the National League North and South divisions was declared null and void.

With lessons learned from that decision, clubs are currently being consulted about how they feel the campaign should be concluded.

Options include null and voiding, points-per-game ratios being implemented, or pausing the campaigns now and restarting in August with a view to finishing 2020-21 at some point in what would have been 2021-22.

Other suggestions put forward have included splitting divisions regionally or shortening leagues by making teams only play one another once.

Ending the East Midlands Counties League campaign via points per game would see Hucknall finish joint third with Eastwood on two points per game, but with a superior goal difference,

But Graves would rather complete a full season rather than go up on the back of playing just nine league fixtures.

"The points per game business, if it happened now - as it's not going to - we'd get promoted," he told The Dispatch. "But we want to carry on playing.

"It is frustrating but there are bigger issues going off. Until they're sorted and things are settled down it's not a priority.

"If we we're allowed to play we would be playing. We want to play when it's safe and we're allowed to legally."

Hucknall have issued a club statement reiterating their stance.

It read: "Following this consultation process with the FA, Hucknall Town FC have stated their choice would be to resume the current season as and when it is safe to do so for supporters, players and club volunteers in order to complete the season.

"Meanwhile, we would again like to thank our loyal fans and sponsors who have continued with their support during these difficult times."
