The Stags won both meetings 1-0 last season, the home game with a Chris Clements striker and the away game with a late goal by Reggie Lambe, and the previous season won 2-1 at home, thanks to a late Anthony Howell goal, and drew 1-1 away with a Sam Clucas effort in the club’s first Football League meeting after coming up together from the Conference, Stags as champions and Newport as play-off final winners over fellow Welsh club Wrexham.

However, in that promotion season of 2012/13, the Exiles had the upper hand with a 2-0 home win following a sensational 4-3 victory for them at One Call Stadium on the opening day of the season.

Newport roared into an early 2-0 lead only to see Stags level early in the second half through Jake Speight and Matt Green.

Newport restored their lead with a free header from ex-Mansfield striker Aaron O’Connor. Then another former Stag, Jefferson Louis, made it 4-2. However, Speight headed his second on 89 minutes to set up a thrilling finish in which Luke Jones missed a free header in injury time.

It was honours even in 2011/12 with Stags’ superb 5-0 home win avenged by a 1-0 defeat in the return in Wales.

The home game was shown live on Premier Sports and Louis Briscoe starred with a brace with other goals by Green, Ross Dyer and Luke O’Neill.

Season 2010/11 was the first time the clubs had faced each other, and they met up three times that year.

In Conference action, Newport won 1-0 at home, Dean Holdworth beating brother David’s Stags side with a screaming goal from Danny Rose, and drew 3-3 in a thriller at Mansfield.

Newport, down to 10 men, surrendered a three goal lead, but still held on for the point.

Goals from Robbie Matthews, Charlie Griffin and Danny Rose put Newport ahead before loanee Louis Moult pulled one back for Mansfield.

Newport captain Chris Todd was sent off for fouling Moult in the box and Louis Briscoe scored from the penalty. Moult then headed home to complete Mansfield’s first-half comeback.

However, the Stags did knock them out of the FA Trophy 4-2 with goals from Paul Connor (2), Keigan Parker and Briscoe, the home side 3-0 up at the break.

Stags are currently sixth and go into this first of two successive home games on the back of two away wins on the bounce.

Newport, who drew 1-1 with Exeter last weekend, are bottom of the table, but have new manager John Sheridan in charge of his first away game since taking over.
