No panic for Stags after defender setback
Mansfield Town remain a defender short for the new season after last week's ill-timed injury to Nathan Cameron '“ but boss David Flitcroft said he isn't panicking.
Stags are currently getting a second opinion on the ankle injury trialist Cameron suffered last week against Derby before deciding whether to rule him out.
Flitcroft admitted, financially, it would help his cause if he were able to sell one of his transfer-listed players, though was happy to work with them if they stay.
But, just 10 days from the big kick-off, he is adamant that, one way or another, he will bring in another defender and is in no rush.
“We are still in that process. I have got to make sure I balance the squad out and balance the books as well,” he said.
“It might be important that we are still looking to work with some of the players we have transfer listed.
“From my point of view, we are still looking to bring that defender in, but I am not going to panic as we have until 4th August to get a permanent one in, then we have until the end of August to bring a loan one in.
“So there is loads of time yet. It’s about bringing the right one in.
“But it might be we have to get a player out before we bring that defender in. Balancing the numbers is very important to us going forward.”
The unlucky Cameron had been proving he was over an injury from last season when he suffered a new one within 11 minutes of coming on as a sub last week.
“The scan results have come back and we sent them to a specialist,” said Flitcroft.
“He read them and now we are getting a second opinion as we speak. It is something we are working on.”
Flitcroft believes someone may yet come in for one of his listed players.
“Over the last four weeks everyone has been building squads, now they are trying to finalise them with that missing one or two players,” he said.
“We do have players available, which I made very apparent from the end of last season. But they can only move on if another club wants them and has a desire to take them on.
“We are still working on the outs as it would help us being able to get one in.”
