SLIDESHOW: Teversal are held again

But two 2-2 scorelines within five days saw Teversal looking back with disappointment that they hadn’t picked the full six points up in their midweek trip to Grimsby Borough and in a more evenly contested game at Rossington Main on Saturday.

The game against Rossington was a close-fought game and both sides could come away wondering how they hadn’t won the game.

Teversal showed their intentions from the off and a neat passing move in the opening minute saw Atkins with the time and space to cross to the far post, where Harris climbed above Coburn to head back across goal marginally too high with the ball nestling on the roof of the net.

Rossington were not to be outdone and when Hyde played a well-weighted pass on the outside of Hopes, Lee Holmes raced o to the through ball to guide an effort past the advancing Dye in the Teversal goal, but on this occasion wide of the target.

The Atkins/Harris combination worked again for the visitors when Atkins’ crossfield ball found Harris, who superbly chested the ball down before guiding a curling effort past the stranded Stevens but also marginally wide of the top corner of the net.

Rossington took the lead when Hyde was given the time and space to drill a low near post cross that saw hesitance in the Teversal defence, with Hopes and Schofield waiting for Dye to collect and the keeper expecting the defenders to clear their lines. With neither of them taking the responsibility, Holmes stuck a toe out to guide the ball home to make it 1-0 on 22 minutes.

The lead was short-lived with the Tevie Boys responding in a positive way and pulling level within three minutes.

It was an unusual goal for Teversal as it was a direct approach when Parkes’ long ball found Dave Cockerill, whose immense control created him the opening to clinically fire past Stevens with aplomb to level.

The game really opened up with both keepers having to be on their mettle to keep their goals intact. In fact the game took on an uncanny air of one team doing something special followed by the other side doing likewise.

So when Teversal took the lead on 32 minutes when Hopes sent a searching ball that saw Fielding mistime his attempted headed clearance, it allowed Adi Harris to pick up the ball before clinically finishing from 20 yards.

Almost inevitably only two minutes later Teversal switched off from a throw in. That allowed Hyde to control and turn before picking out the Rossington talisman Holmes with time and space to punish the slack defending by producing a calm, assured 20 yard finish by curling an effort past Dye’s full length dive that couldn’t stop the ball resting in the bottom corner to make it 2-2.

Teversal should have gone in at the break in front when Cockerill, combining with Dickinson, was given a clear run on goal.

But, with the defenders closing him down, the midfielder’s effort brought out an excellent save from Stevens with honours even after 45 minutes.

The second half was much the same as the first, but without the goals.

Both sides created opportunities but both custodians made some excellent saves with Stevens in the home goal being the busier of the two.

Also like the first half it was a bit tit for tat. So when Adcock chipped in a ball for Pilmore to head back across goal that was denied by another excellent save from Stevens, Rossington went down the other end with Holmes putting Hatton through, who was denied by the save of the day from Dye.

On 75 minutes Hyde was lucky to not receive a yellow card for simulation when he cut into the Teversal penalty area only to lose control of the ball, and when he brushed past Hopes, dropped to the floor claiming a penalty with the referee waving play on.

The referee then frustrated the visitors when they hit Rossington on the break.

Coburn made a cynical challenge on Adcock, but with Pilmore maintaining possession and Teversal on a three on two situation and looking threatening, they were disappointed when the referee pulled it back for the free kick.

Justice nearly prevailed when Mark Parkes produced an excellent free kick over the wall, but again Stevens came to Rosso’s rescue with an equally impressive save.

With the game coming to a close, both sides will have come off thinking they had done enough to win it, but with most neutrals saying the draw was a fair result in an excellent game of Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One football.

Next up for Teversal is a visit by Eccleshill United on Saturday (3pm) in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One.
