Under boss Tommy Cummings, the squad went on to have a very successful 1964/65 season, building from their seventh place finish the year before to a final place of third in the old Division Three, pipped to promotion only by goal average in the final game of the season.
Stags ended up with an average of 1.557, but Bristol City stole the second spot with a figure of 1.673 – agony for the Stags.
