Gymnastics club raising the Rio bar

Downie sisters, Becky and Ellie, are among those at Notts Gymnastics Academy to benefit from new equipment ahead of Rio 2016.

The academy, based at the East Midlands Gymnastic and National Sports Acrobatic Centre near Rushcliffe Leisure Centre in West Bridgford, has installed a asymmetric bars.

The bars are the same design as those used at the Olympic Games this summer. Becky and Ellie played a key part in helping Team GB cement a place at the Olympics with a Team Bronze at the recent 2015 World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow.

A £250 donation from Taylor Wimpey helped the academy’s, a non-profit organisation, cause.

Jo Miller from the academy said: “The bars we have bought are the ones they’ll be using at Rio. Rebecca has won medals for bars and is the leading expert on bars for GB, so it’s particularly important for her to have the current equipment.”
