A happy New Year for Giants’ women

Mansfield Giants’ Women kickstarted the year with a dazzling 77-37 victory over Doncaster Danum in England Basketball’s Division Two North.

The home side took control of the game from the tip-off against a Doncaster side that had added players since their first meeting earlier in the season.

After a run of bad luck before Christmas, Giants were keen to start the year off on the right foot, playing to their strengths and using their size to dominate offensive and defensive boards.

However, with low numbers again due to a number of long term injuries and key seniors Alison Bridge and Charlotte Levitt picking up injuries during the game, Doncaster upped the intensity to try to take advantage.

But is was Katy Taylor and Gail Richards that got out on the fast break to keep the Giants ahead, finding Krista Van Alten inside, despite some tough contact.

Once again the juniors stepped up to add some much needed energy, with both Chloe Gaynor and Heather Clarke putting points on the board.

Giants’ top scorers: Van Alten 22, Richards 14, Taylor 13.

The women travel away this weekend to play Loughborough Student Riders II, who have already beaten them twice this season.
