Rolls halt wretched run at last

COURAGEOUS ROLLS-ROYCE LEISURE (SUNDAY) tossed the formbook aside to win 4-2 at Redhill and halt a wretched run of 15 defeats in 17 competitive matches.

The run, which stretches back to March, looked sure to be extended when the home side eased into a 2-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes.

But after a roasting from caretaker manager Paul Jordan, they responded to show their true potential at last and double their points' tally for the season in the Notts Sunday Morning League's Premier Premier Division.

Rolls were always second best in a poor first-half performance against one of the better fancied sides in the top flight.

Simon Gordon gave Redhill the lead and an own goal from left-back Simon Hulme added to the visitors' misery.

But Dale Lancaster gave the locals a lifeline with the last kick of the half, lashing a vicious cross-shot in to the top corner.

And after being woken up at the interval and switching to an adventurous 4-3-3 formation, Rolls produced their best football of the season.

Prompted by the tireless midfield trio of Richard Harrison, new skipper Terry Walker and Jonathan Dakers, Rolls overran their hosts and dominated.

Enigmatic striker Wes Armstrong got them level with a cool finish after racing through for a one-on-one. And the same player gave Rolls a 70th minute lead with an almost identical goal.

Ahead and visibly relaxed, the Hucknall side suddenly began to play with the kind of confidence and determination that had been lacking for most of the campaign.

You could sense they weren't going to lose and the points were duly wrapped up in the dying minutes when good approach-play by substitute Ashley Marshall set up strike partner Dave Giugno, who thundered a shot into the top corner.

Every player played his part in the win but the defence were magnificent, especially man-of-the-match Tom Harrison, who led by example to fill the boots of Dave Newton.
