Second KO Cup win in three years

Spot On (formerly Yew Tree) tasted Knockout Cup final heartbreak for the second successive year in the Hucknall Wednesday Pool League.

Runners-up to Station B last year, the team was beaten 4-1 in the 2017 final at George Street by Royal British Legion B.

For Legion, led by captain Dean Dymock, it was a second cup final win in three years.

Legion B made a positive start, moving into a 2-0 lead as Stuart Platts beat Dion Nangle in the opening leg before Geoff Taylor defeated Dean North.

Captain Karl Jones got Spot On back into the match, beating Dave Wainwright and even throwing in an exhibition shot to pot the black.

Legion captain Dymock put his side 3-1 in front, defeating John Whyley.

The cup was secured on the next leg when Colin ‘SAS’ Draycott produced a fine leg of pool to beat Wayne Bettridge.

In the Mellors/Bicknell Plate final, Chequers B overcame Liberal 4-3.

Chequers came from behind three times after trailing 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before winning the last two games through Jay Smith and James Macdonald.

In the previous week’s league action, Royal British Legion A moved a point clear of Liberal with just two matches remaining.

Legion A defeated George Street Ladies 7-1 whilst Liberal dropped a valuable point in a 4-4 draw against Spot On B — a point that seemed unlikely when they trailed 4-1.

In the last games of the season, Legion A face a trip to third-placed Tree Army before a home match against Green Dragon, while Liberal travel to Bentinck Nomads before concluding their season at home to Legion B.

Only leg difference separates the teams from third to fifth.

Tree Army remained third, despite losing 5-3 at Bentinck Newbies.

Half Moon are fourth after dropping a point in a 4-4 draw against Chequers B.

Royal British Legion B are fifth after a 6-2 win at Portland Arms.

Spot On B ensured they cannot be caught in seventh place after maintaining the five-point gap to eighth place Newbies by beating Bentinck Nomads 7-1.

Chequers A and Green Dragon drew 4-4.

The semi-finals of the league singles will be contested by Dean Dymock, Paddy McShane, Aiden Hewes and Andrea Green.

In the quarter-finals, Dymock defeated James Bettridge 3-1, McShane beat Tony Flanagan 3-2, Hewes beat Michael Bradley 3-1 and Green saw off George Roy 3-2.
