Organisers sent out a statement, saying: “The committee met yesterday and today on Thorpe Pastures and regretfully have to cancel this year’s race.

“The field where 500 cars are usually parked for the event is sodden with standing water in places.

“The forecast for the weekend is for more rain and high winds and in the circumstances we have no choice but to cancel this year’s race.

“Since the first race in 1953 it has been cancelled three times in 1998, 2000 and 2004 when the weather made it impossible to hold the event.”
