Town boss takes Masters by storm

HUCKNALL Town manager Andy Legg proved he can still cut it on the pitch with a Player Of The Tournament performance in the Masters Football series.

Legg pulled on the black and white stripes of his former club, Notts County, to do battle with across-the-Trent rivals Nottingham Forest, Derby County and Stoke City in the Central area section of the six-a-side competition at Nottingham Arena.

It has become a popular event and is primarily for ex-professionals with heats held all over the country before a national final, which is this year being held in Manchester in September.

Sadly Legg won't be there after The Magpies, featuring the likes of goalkeeper Steve Cherry and striker Tommy Johnson, lost 4-2 on penalties to The Reds, who were unbeaten.

County actually took the lead in the final through Dave Regis, but Johnson was sent to the sin bin and Forest took full advantage with Neil Thompson grabbing the equaliser.

Yellows boss Legg said: "It was really enjoyable and very competitive. We were just disappointed to lose to Forest in the final, having Tommy (Johnson) sent off didn't help us.

"I didn't get to take my penalty because I was fifth and it was all over by then.

"There was a decent crowd of about 4,500 and it gets better every year with the players getting fitter.

"Before it used to be a bit of a walkabout but it brings the competitive spirit out of ex-professionals. It is bred into them."

At least Legg, who has played in the competition for the past five years – three times for Notts and twice for another of his old clubs, Birmingham City – had the consolation of the Player Of The Tournament award.

He also scored a brace against The Rams in a 3-2 victory that sent Notts into the final

Among the other famous names on show were Bulwell-bred defender Steve Chettle, Ian Woan, Gary Parker and Nigel Jemson for Forest and Darren Wassall, Darryl Powell and Phil Gee for Derby.
