While pictures fare slightly better than words, they are often put on the back of packs making them less visible and less effective, according to research published online in the journal Tobacco Control. More than 1,000 11 to 16-year-olds in the UK were questioned about their response to warnings in 2008 and a further 1,000 were questioned in 2011. Most of the teenagers in both surveys (68% to 75%) had never smoked while 17% to 22% had experimented with cigarettes, and around one in 10 were already regular smokers - defined as at least one cigarette a week. In response to the latest flu jab uptake figures, doctors across Derbyshire are urging those most at risk from flu to protect themselves and their families as a matter of priority with a free flu jab.

'Risky drinkers' who regularly consume more than the safe limits without binge drinking or getting drunk are unknowingly increasing their chances of developing cancer, liver disease and mental health issues, according to a report. More than a quarter of men (26%) are enjoying one too many - compared to only 18% of women, the study found. The pattern is increasing with age, with nearly one in three men over 45 (31%) regularly drinking more than they should. By contrast, the highest number of female risky drinkers are aged 16-24 (22%).
