Say ciao to the new Fiat 500 made entirely from Lego

A life-size Lego replica of one of the most iconic designs in motoring history has been revealed in Italy to mark the launch of a new modelling kit.

The 1:1 scale model of the famous Fiat 500 was unveiled in Fiat’s home city of Turin to celebrate the release of the Lego Creator Expert set.

Made from 189,032 Lego bricks and weighing 400kg - only around 100kg lighter than the real original - the Lego Fiat 500 took 830 man hours to build and features an original Fiat 500 steering wheel.

The brick replica will take pride of place among a display of original Fiat 500s at Fiat’s factory in Turin before heading out on a tour of Lego stores to promote the new set.

The £74.99 Creator Expert kit is based on a 500F Legend from the late 1960s, and replicates many of the real thing’s famous features in 960 bricks. Everything from the tiny two-cylinder engine to the rag-top sunroof has been recreated and the set also includes a spare wheel, rear-mounted luggage rack with suitcase and, randomly, a folding easel and colour palette and a painting of the car outside Rome’s famous Colosseum.

Pierre Normandin, Lego designer, said: “The Fiat 500 is a global automotive icon – having first launched in 1957 and still a timeless classic. To see it celebrated in the beautiful city of Turin with this incredible new Creator Expert set and such an epic life-size build is testament to how beloved this car is.”

Cristiano Fiorio, head of brand marketing communication, for Fiat in Europe, commented: “Throughout its illustrious history, the Fiat 500 has surpassed its original material manifestation to take its place in the collective unconscious, becoming an international icon. This is also demonstrated by its recent exposure at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

“We know well that the Lego Group handpicks iconic products, and that the Fiat 500 is not only a car but an artistic and cultural phenomenon with strong symbolic value, as well as a joyous and colorful expression of the Italian spirit around the world."
